Proverbs 16
“Commit thy works unto the Lord . . .” v.3“
A man’s heart deviseth his ways . . .” v.9
“The lot is cast into the lap, but . . .” v.33
As I write these lines I have a plan for my day. It is a good plan
and a practical one. Being people who plans is a God-like quality. Our
God has an eternal plan and a plan for your life and mine. Our earthly
life is not eternal, He has a plan for us.
ROLLING OUR PLANS (3) The word “commit”
is also translated trust in other places. It is used prophetically of
Jesus in Ps.22:8 of trusting His life to His Father during the
crucifixion.
The word “commit” means to roll a weight
from one place to another. Jesus “rolled” the horrors of his death
experience onto His Father. You and I must begin our personal planning
by “rolling” – via prayer – our schedule onto our Master Controller.
WRESTLING OUR PLANS (9) Our English word “devise”
can have some sinister connotations, but not here. To devise plans
means we thoughtfully interweave all that must take place today into a
seemingly logical process to get it all done. This is a good thing.
RELEASING OUR PLANS (33)
At some point we must put our plans into action. Sometimes the way we
think things will happen actually do. Many times they do not. “Casting lots”
can be translated as rolling the dice. Once you release the dice you
have lost control over what number they will turn up. You were hoping
and planning for an 8, but you get a 6. The same thing often happens
with our plans.
The joy comes in knowing that while we cannot control the dice, God
can. Not only can He, He actually does! Our Heavenly Father delights in
having circumstances impact our plans we have rolled onto Him and have
wrestled through with Him.
