ECOWAS Meeting
The economic communities of West African states ECOWAS, is developing a long term development plan to fight against extreme poverty, insecurity and at the same time consolidate democratic ideals among member nations. President of the ECOWAS commission kadre desire made the declaration at the opening of the 10th edition of the ECOWAS development partner’s annual coordination meeting holding in Abuja. NTA News24 reports that the commission’s president used the opportunity to commend the support of all partners in attaining the ECOWAS vision 2020. This edition provided participants the opportunity to understand some of the commission challenges, to strengthen political dialogue on the ECOWAS vision and anticipate prospects for support on the commission’s priority areas of intervention.
The meeting therefore had so much to discuss as ECOWAS member states are faced with enormous challenges which includes insecurity and the spread of the deadly Ebola virus. ECOWAS president Kadre desire quedraogo said attention will be given to address the impact of Ebola on the region’s public health sector and the economy. He acknowledged the support of developing partners and appealed to the governments of member states and ECOWAS partners to support global effort to control the epidemic and arrest insecurity in the region. His views were echoed by several representatives of ECOWAS partners some of who also emphasized that closing the boarders is not the solution to the challenges. Stand up(with the theme regional peace and security for the 10th edition of the ECOWAS development partners annual coordinating meeting is expected to last for three days with two panels set up, one of which is to discuss lessons learnt from crisis management, peace and security consolidation process. And the other is expected to deliberate on the consolidation of the economic integration process and financing challenges.
